Colored nail polish did not make an appearance until the 1920s. Early nail polish formulas were created using basic ingredients such as lavender oil, Carmine, oxide tin, and bergamot oil. It was more common to polish nails with tinted powders and creams, and finishing off by buffing the nail until left shiny. One type of polishing product sold around this time was Graf's Hyglo nail polish paste.

The health risks associated with nail polish are disputed. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, "The amount of chemicals used in animal studies is probably a couple of hundred times higher than what you would be exposed to from using nail polish every week or so. So the chances of any individual phthalate producing such harm [in humans] is very slim." A more serious health risk is faced by professional nail technicians, who perform manicures over a workstation, known as a nail table, on which the client's hands rest – directly below the technician's breathing zone. In 2009, Susan Reutman, an epidemiologist with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Division of Applied Research and Technology, announced a federal effort to evaluate the effectiveness of downdraft vented nail tables (VNTs) in removing potential nail polish chemical and dust exposures from the technician's work area. These ventilation systems have potential to reduce worker exposure to chemicals by at least 50%. Many nail technicians will often wear masks to cover their mouth and nose from inhaling any of the harsh dust or chemicals from the nail products.

You can take your own tools to a nail salon, even if you feel self-conscious. Germs can linger on salon tools that aren't cleaned, like emery boards. If you choose to use the salon's tools, they should be heat sterilized, soaked in clear antibacterial solution, or come prepackaged. Ask for a new tool if one falls on the floor during your appointment. You don't want to leave the salon with a skin or nail infection.

Use an acetone nail polish remover (or a nonacetone remover followed by lemon juice) to remove stains. When you polish, use a clear base coat first. But if your discolored nails are also thick, brittle, or curled, you may have a fungal infection. Skip the polish and head over to your doctor's office instead.

Rushing through each coat will cause your mani to erode faster — as well as using too thick a layer, both of which happen all too often in busy salons. "You absolutely must let each layer — base coat, first polish application, second polish application and top coat — dry completely before doing the next," said nail expert Deborah Lippmann, who told Harper's Bazaar magazine, "When you paint on your next coat before the layer before is fully dry, you get peeling in sheets."
“Lots of dirt and other gross things accumulate under your nails during the course of the day but it just takes a quick scrub with a nail brush to get it out. So if you come in and say ‘Oh my nails are so gross’ I will clean them out for you but I hope you’d tip a little bit more after that.” —Amy Harold Get ready for your next manicure with these simple ways to make your nails stronger.
A manicure is a cosmetic beauty treatment for the fingernails and hands performed at home or in a nail salon. A manicure consists of filing and shaping the free edge, pushing and clipping (with a cuticle pusher and cuticle nippers) any nonliving tissue (but limited to the cuticle and hangnails), treatments with various liquids, massage of the hand, and the application of fingernail polish. When the same is applied to the toenails and feet, the treatment is referred to as a pedicure.
