According to the US Department of Labor, manicure and pedicure specialists earned a median income of around $20,820 in 2015.[2] Most professionals earn an hourly wage or salary which can be augmented through customer tips. Independent nail techs depend on repeat business and consistent business to earn their livings. The most successful independent manicure technicians may earn salaries of over $50,000 per year.[3] Also, many nail technicians can earn up to $100 per hour from performing more technical nail treatments, such as pink and whites and sculpting. Although these treatments are not particularly popular for the feet, they are, nonetheless, an available option should anyone wish to have such a treatment. A standard pedicure treatment usually costs in the region of $40. Similar salaries can be earned by skilled pedicure techs working in exclusive and high end spas and salons.
“The first thing is that you really have to look around you and say, ‘If this is what it looks like publicly, if there are any red flags, then what does it look like behind the scenes?’” Katta explained. “You want to look for those obvious things: Are trash cans overflowing? Are there nail clippings or nail filings or debris from a procedure around the work spaces?”
Trim your cuticles if you want to get rid of dead skin or hang nails. Use a cuticle trimmer to cut off the cuticles after you push them back. Simply use this tool as a miniature pair of scissors to snip off the dead cuticle skin around your toes. Start at the outer edge of your cuticles, and make small snips until you remove all of the dead skin.[12]

Scrub your feet with a pumice stone or foot file while they are wet. A pumice stone is a light, porous volcanic rock often used to remove dead skin cells and calluses. You can also use a foot file to do this. To use, hold the tool up to your foot, and quickly move it back and forth. It is best to work in about 1 in (2.5 cm) areas at a time. Apply steady pressure, but be careful not to push too hard.[5]
A paraffin manicure is a must for anyone with dry or overworked hands. Paraffin wax is used to infuse the skin with instantaneous moisture, leaving it smooth and supple. It also includes a stimulating hand massage and finishes with a chic basic manicure polish look. Some paraffin treatments include various oils, like grape seed oil, for extra moisturizing benefits.

“For pumice stones or emery boards, if you are not sure of the cleanliness of the salon, you should really bring your own or ask them to use a disposable one that they open in front of you,” Katta said. “If they are using a reusable metal file, you need to make sure it is properly sterilized in an autoclave. If it is not properly sterilized, you can pass viruses or bacteria from one person to another.”
Having a regular maintenance routine is a surefire way to get — and keep — your hands in great shape. Galvez suggest using a hand scrub, followed by a hand massage with lotion, and then finish with a cuticle oil. If you can’t do a full routine, at the very least, urges Galvez, apply lotion. “Leave it somewhere where you will see it as much as possible,” she recommends. To get the most benefit, it needs the opportunity to soak in, so apply it before bedtime, she says. You’ll wake up to soft hands and extra shiny nails that look salon fresh, even if they’re a week (or more) old. I won’t tell if you won’t.
